Dumortierite is found in a variety of colors, including blues, browns, reds, and whites, although the blue is the most common. It is sometimes seen growing as a blue inclusion in quartz. Rare specimens show clearly defined needles of Dumortierite growing through the crystal. It was first classified in 1881 by French minerologist Gonnard. He named it after paleontologist Eugene Dumortier.
