Magnetite is a key iron ore, and is the most magnetic of all minerals. Normal magnetite is attracted to a magnet, but special magnetite called Lodestone is actually magnetic itself and can affect other magnetic objects, such as a compass needle. According to Greek legend, magnetite was discovered by a wandering shepherd named Magnes who has his metal tipped cane become attracted to some mysterious black stones as if by magic.
