Ocean Jasper is a rare orbicular Jasper that can only be found in two locations in Madagascar. Actually, it is thought to be a chalcedony rather than a Jasper despite its name. Although thought to be a very new find, it has in fact been mined since 1999. It was originally documented in the 1920s and later officially documented in a French Mineral Encyclopedia in 1977. The two deposits of ocean jasper are about 10 miles apart. The first is near Marovato and is known for the multicolored and druzy material it produced. The second deposit is near Kambaby and produces mainly green and yellow opaque material. It should not be confused with kambaba jasper, which although also from Madagascar, is found much further inland. The first deposit has been effectively exhausted today, but the second one continues to be mined It can be found in a huge range of colors, from yellows, pinks and reds, through to purples and blues, and more earthly color such as greens, browns, and whites.
